The Daily Anarcho-Stack: I was once a college radio DJ; playing Women in Music
I had two different radio shows: One playing Women in Metal (FemTel) and one playing Women in EDM (Femtronica.)
My D.J. name was DJUnknown. I had my Twitter handle for this show done by staff. It was the one of the first Twitter handles on campus around the Summer of 2007. I really did not promote my show much. However, I got a lot of “interesting” feedback when the Director of Student Media contacted about a SoundExchange complaint filed against my shows as they could not decipher what was playing because some of these women were either too whispery or too growly during playback. Later on, my show consolidated into “Know Your Women.”
One of my show entries; burned on the Apple computer I was using to stream my show:
Two artists that would appear on my shows (respectively, FemTel & Femtronia):
Astate: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Astarte_(band)
Astarte was an all-female black metal band from Athens, Greece, named after the goddess Astarte (1995–2014).
JES: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jes_(musician)
Jes Brieden, known professionally as Jes (stylized as JES), is an American singer, songwriter, producer, composer, and DJ. She is a co-founder of the US dance band Motorcycle, who released the song "As the Rush Comes" in 2003.
I really like these two genres and the sub genres that go with them: Heavy Metal and Electronic Dance Music. I have been into Women and Rock with the Riot Grrrl scene in the early 1990’s and EuroDance in the late 1980’s. Combine these to genres and you get Aggro-Tech; Gravers; Electronic Body Music; Synth Metal; Goth Dance; etc… I find that confuses people. And I am OK with that.
Being a DJ, also allowed me to see Evanescence, Grimes, Shiny Toy Guns, Paramore, Tori Amos, Flyleaf, JES, a lot more artists coming through town, interviewing them and showcasing their music on my show. I might or might not have those archives as the CD’s they were burned to and now, may not be in my possession anymore. I will have to check my CD collection to find that out. In the meantime, I will see how I can post my shows on Substack. I will need to find a way to play CD’s on a computer first. Thanks for reading Women in Music!
